Protecting What Truly Matters: A Real-Life Story

Protecting What Truly Matters: A Real-Life Story

As part of the ongoing service proposition for our existing mortgage clients, a 27 year old farmer was introduced to our protection team for a review. Like many young individuals, he hadn’t considered what would happen if illness stopped him from working long-term and after a detailed financial review, we decided the priorities should be protecting both his income and financial commitments.

We researched the market and arranged Life and Critical Illness Cover to ensure his mortgage would be repaid should he suffer from and survive a serious illness or pass away unexpectedly. We also arranged Income Protection to provide ongoing financial support should he become unable to work for an extended period.

Just over a year later our client suffered a stroke. At 28 it was completely unexpected and left him unable to continue working in his physically demanding role as a farmer.

While recovery was slow and uncertain, one thing my client didn’t have to worry about was his finances.

His Critical Illness Cover paid out and enabled him to clear his mortgage and thereby removing a huge financial burden at an already difficult time. Additionally, his Income Protection policy kicked in and began providing a regular monthly income to him. This gave him the peace of mind to focus fully on his rehabilitation, without the pressure of having to rush back to work to pay bills.

My client later told us that his friends mocked him for taking out cover as he was young, fit and healthy. "Not listening to them and taking professional advice was the best thing he ever did" – his words and not ours!

Stick or Twist – Do You Really Need To Remortgage To Raise Funds?

There are lots of reasons why you may be looking to borrow money, and improving a property still tops the charts. Consolidating debts, vehicle purchases and supporting children are next on the list and typically the first thought is to remortgage. However, this isn’t always the smartest choice, and a second charge mortgage can often provide a more suitable and cost-effective solution.
